Rowers Peadar Flaherty (in the bow), Anthony Keane (middle) and Tomas Keane (stern) compete in a curragh race at Cruinniú na mBád—"The Meeting of the Boats"—the annual festival in Kinvara that celebrates the historic Galway Hookers and the seafaring culture of Connemara, 1988.
Curraghs are traditional lightweight rowboats featuring a wood frame covered in tarred canvas. Historically, they were used in Galway for fishing, transporting cargo and livestock, and traveling between islands and the mainland. Today, they remain popular for recreational rowing, coastal racing, and preserving traditional maritime heritage
